Black Wood Environmental Biedrība
Black Wood Environmental Biedrība was founded through the efforts of eight young people from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences who came together during their university years with the goal of making the world more livable by reducing the impacts of climate change. Their vision focused on using natural resources efficiently, producing knowledge, transforming it into practical action, and raising public awareness to leave a better world for future generations.
The group began its activities as an informal initiative in 2018. While continuing their academic studies, the founders carried out research and developed projects to promote environmental sustainability and social responsibility. As the initiative expanded and reached a wider audience, they decided to continue their work beyond the university structure. In 2022, they officially established Black Wood Environmental Biedrība as an association to broaden their activities and increase their social impact.
The association brings together academicians, food engineers, environmental engineers, dietitians, educators, artists, project specialists, students, and dedicated volunteers. It welcomes individuals from different backgrounds who share a commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable lifestyles. Its overall objective is to safeguard ecosystems while ensuring public welfare, the rights of future generations, and access to healthy, reliable, and sustainable food. The association also promotes long-term, needs-based approaches that prioritize local production, self-sufficiency, and traditional knowledge. Encouraging learning that transforms individual behavior and social practices into sustainable habits is another key objective.
Our Projects
Every Bite of Food Matters

Our project, held in Riga, Latvia between February 13–18, 2024, brought together 48 participants from Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine to raise awareness about the environmental, social, and economic impacts of food waste and to equip young people with practical strategies to reduce it. Through interactive workshops and cultural exchange, the project also fostered international cooperation and youth engagement under the Erasmus+ program.
Protect Your Future with Disaster Awareness

Our project, held in Riga, Latvia from May 12–19, 2024, brought together 36 young participants from Latvia, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Portugal to raise awareness about natural disaster preparedness and effective intervention. Through workshops and inclusive activities, the project aimed to build a more informed, resilient, and socially cohesive society while also supporting youth with fewer opportunities and promoting intercultural understanding.

This project, held in Budapest from October 2–7, 2023, brought together 55 participants from Hungary, Czech Republic, Latvia, Spain, and Turkey to raise awareness about environmental sustainability, zero waste, conscious consumption, and recycling. Through interactive activities and intercultural exchange, the project aimed to promote environmentally responsible behaviors and contribute to the fight against the climate crisis.
If you know nature, you know your future!

Our project brought together young participants from France, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine to raise awareness about the environmental harm caused by plastic bag use and to promote sustainable alternatives like cloth and reusable bags. Through creative workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns, the project aimed to encourage eco-friendly habits, reduce single-use plastics, and support youth engagement in environmental protection under the Erasmus+ framework.
Cruelty Free Fashion

Our project brought together young participants from Czechia, Hungary, Turkey, Latvia, Romania, and Italy to raise awareness about animal rights and promote cruelty-free, ethical attitudes toward animals in daily life, fashion, and cosmetics. Through discussions, workshops, and intercultural exchange, the project aimed to encourage volunteerism, foster empathy, and inspire long-term action against animal cruelty, while also supporting the goals of the Erasmus+ program.
Young Guardians of Forest and Nature

This youth workers mobility project "Young Guardians of Forest and Nature" brings together 40 participants from Türkiye, France, Iceland, Romania, Lithuania, and Austria to promote environmental awareness and action among young people. The project aims to empower youth to become active defenders of forests and nature through non-formal education, hands-on activities, and international collaboration.
Promoting Youth Leadership in Forestry and Environmental Entrepreneurship

The "Promoting Youth Leadership in Forestry and Environmental Entrepreneurship" project aims to empower young people to become leaders in sustainable forestry and environmental conservation. Through training workshops, the Youth Ambassador Program, international collaborations, and hackathons, the project offers young people opportunities to explore careers in the environmental sector, foster entrepreneurship, and engage in community-based environmental initiatives. Currently ongoing, the project helps develop young people's environmental awareness and encourages them to contribute to positive societal change.
