Protect Your Future with Disaster Awareness - Mapping Risks and Mitigating Crises

The Youth Exchange project "Protect Your Future with Disaster Awareness" (Project No: 2023-3-LV02-KA152-YOU-000178766), organized by the applicant organization Black Wood Environmental Biedrība, successfully took place in Riga, Latvia, between 12.05.2024 and 19.05.2024. This initiative brought together dynamic participants from Bulgaria, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Türkiye to engage in meaningful intercultural dialogue and capacity building. By utilizing non-formal learning methodologies, the project established a solid foundation for international cooperation, equipping young people with essential tools for community development, personal growth, and disaster preparedness.


The learning pathway advanced with an energetic "Human Bingo" icebreaker designed to catalyze active participation, foster inquiry-based learning, and break down social barriers across multinational teams. This playful engagement seamlessly transitioned into an extensive "Natural Disasters: Types and Causes Presentation," which aimed to increase regional disaster literacy. Participants closely examined localized hazards specific to their home countries—ranging from seismic vulnerability in Italy and Turkey to flash floods in Romania, landslides in Hungary, and severe forest fires in Spain. By breaking into peer-learning circles, the groups brainstormed mitigation strategies, turning theoretical geographical data into practical, collaborative protective measures.


Building upon regional vulnerabilities, a specialized session on the "Causes of Climate Change and Current Statistics" was introduced to deepen participants' understanding of global ecological crises. The main objective was to analyze the primary anthropogenic drivers of global warming, including greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and intensive agricultural practices. By leveraging tangible data—such as the 1.2°C rise in global temperature and the 40% increase in extreme weather events—the interactive presentation transformed abstract environmental concepts into a relatable crisis. This analysis motivated participants to evaluate the severe environmental, economic, and social consequences affecting vulnerable ecosystems and human populations worldwide.


The core educational content was put into practice through a rigorous "Scenario Analyses and Solution Suggestions" workshop that leveraged problem-based learning. Teams evaluated actual catastrophic events from the past five years, such as the severe European floods, Greek forest fires, and historical droughts in Africa. The main aim of this analysis was to challenge participants to apply their newly acquired disaster literacy to complex, real-world crises. Through intensive collaborative work, multinational teams formulated cross-border action proposals, evaluated implementation barriers, and presented creative community-led solutions to combat climate emergencies.


Completing the active learning cycle, a comprehensive evaluation framework using Typeform online surveys and collective feedback channels was utilized. This mechanism focused heavily on self-assessment, encouraging participants to critically reflect on their personal interaction levels, the utility of the training materials, and their overall conceptual retention. Gathering real-time qualitative insights allowed partner organizations to monitor engagement and fine-tune methodologies dynamically. This user-friendly evaluation process reinforced personal accountability for learning, making the educational experience highly adaptive, democratic, and participant-centric.
