The international youth project "Protect Your Future with Disaster Awareness" was successfully held in Riga, Latvia, from May 12 to 19, 2024. Coordinated by Black Wood Environmental Biedrība, the project brought together 36 young participants from Latvia, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Portugal. The main aim of the initiative was to raise awareness among young people about natural disaster preparedness and effective response strategies, while promoting resilience, inclusion, and intercultural understanding.
A Youth-Led Approach to Disaster Preparedness
In an era where climate change, urbanization, and environmental degradation increase the frequency and impact of natural disasters, it is essential that young people are equipped with the knowledge and tools to respond effectively. Through a week-long series of interactive workshops, group activities, and training sessions, participants explored key topics such as disaster risk reduction, emergency response techniques, first aid, and crisis communication.
By engaging youth in hands-on learning experiences, the project aimed to foster a culture of preparedness and empower young individuals to take active roles in promoting safety and awareness within their communities.
Promoting Inclusion and Intercultural Dialogue
Beyond knowledge-sharing, Protect Your Future with Disaster Awareness also focused on building inclusive and socially cohesive communities. The project created a welcoming space where young people from diverse backgrounds could connect, collaborate, and learn from one another.
Through intercultural evenings, team-building activities, and country-specific presentations, participants had the opportunity to explore different cultures, break down stereotypes, and build lasting friendships. Special attention was given to including youth with fewer opportunities, ensuring equal participation and representation throughout the program.
Towards More Resilient Communities
One of the key outcomes of the project was to empower young people to become ambassadors of resilience in their home countries. Participants returned with not only enhanced personal skills and a broader worldview but also with the motivation to share their knowledge and take proactive steps within their own communities.
The project served as both a learning platform and a call to action for youth to take responsibility in shaping safer, more sustainable futures.
